OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS: Environmental art planning collective in Joutsa

Taidelaitos Haihatus ja Ennallistamista ympäristötaiteen keinoin -hanke (Humanistinen ammattikorkeakoulu) etsivät taiteilijoita osaksi monialaista kollektiivia suunnittelemaan ympäristötaidetta tai maataidetta entiselle turvetuotantoalueelle Joutsaan.

Haihatus Art Center and the project Restoration through Environmental Art (Humak University
of Applied Sciences) invite applications from artists to join a multidisciplinary collective to
design environmental or land art for a former peat production area in Joutsa.

We are seeking artists whose practices are guided by ecologically sustainable, site-specific, and community-oriented approaches.

The selected artists, together with the rest of the collective, will convene on Friday–Saturday,
7–8 August 2026, for Suosymposium (the Peatland Symposium), to be held at Haihatus Art
Center. During the symposium, the collective will engage with former peat production sites
and restoration processes and share their expertise from the intersection of environmental
issues and artistic practices. The programme will also include multidisciplinary discussions
on ecologically restorative art appropriate for these contexts. On the basis of these
discussions, the artists will develop preliminary proposals for environmental artworks to be
realised in Joutsa. These proposals will be presented to the collective in early September.
In autumn, a project application to the JTF (Just Transition Fund) will be prepared to enable the realisation of the works. The project will be developed in accordance with both the
requirements of the artworks and the criteria of JTF funding. Funding may be applied for the
years 2027–2029. Further information on JTF funding is available at:

https://rakennerahastot.fi/en/just-transition-fund-jtf-

If the funding is granted, the selected artists will continue to develop and implement their proposals as part of a multidisciplinary team, working in collaboration with environmental
and peatland sector experts within the residency programme of Haihatus Art Center.
Selected artists / artist groups will be paid a fee of €2,000 per artist / artist group for
participation in the Suosymposium (the Peatland Symposium) and subsequent work (either
invoiced, including VAT, or as a salary, in which case both employee and employer
contributions will be deducted from the amount). Travel expenses for the Symposium will be
reimbursed, and participants will also be provided with meals and accommodation.

Project organisers

The selection of artists will be made by representatives of Haihatus Art Center and the
Restoration through Environmental Art project, with the possible support of environmental
experts. Emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s experience with environmental themes,
as well as site-specific and community-oriented artistic practices.

Further information on the Haihatus Art Center residency programme is available at:
https://haihatus.fi/en/residency/ The Joutsa region offers considerable potential for cultural
and nature-based tourism, including Haihatus Art Center and Leivonmäki National Park.
The aim of the Restoration through Environmental Art project is to explore how ecologically
restorative environmental art may serve as a new form of post-use for former peat production areas. Further information is available at: https://www.humak.fi/hankkeet/ennallistamista/
