OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS: E75 – a journey through Europe…
Haihatus Art Center and Residency, located in Joutsa, Finland, is an inspiring and relaxed international art hub. Haihatus is a great, communal place where art, in all of its forms, is the driving force.
During the summer, art exhibitions, music concerts, workshops, performances, and KITA—Finland’s only gallery dedicated to kinetic art—attract visitors from both Finland and abroad.
In the winter, you can enjoy cozy music evenings and intimate art exhibitions. Additionally, the residency program is a key focus during this season, offering a unique opportunity for artists and arts students from all disciplines.
For details on dates and opening hours, please visit our Exhibitions and Events sections.
The Highlight of the Year
Haihatus hosts a variety of contemporary art exhibitions each year. The exhibition seasons culminate in a large group exhibition held during the summer, showcasing a fascinating array of works by both Finnish and international contemporary and ITE (Outsider) artists.
Additionally, the winter season features smaller-scale exhibitions.
The years at Haihatus culminate in a major summer exhibition of contemporary art, bringing together works from artists with diverse practices and backgrounds. The art offerings consist of various exhibition sections located within Haihatus’ charming grounds, including its galleries and sculpture park, as well as at its second venue, KITA Gallery—the only gallery in Finland specializing in kinetic art.
Voimametsä is an inclusive, low-threshold community and environmental art project designed for individuals of all ages, aimed at preventing social exclusion. The project welcomes anyone interested in creating art together.
Voimametsä has been established within Haihatus’ outdoor environment and is also featured as part of the summer exhibitions. The area is open to the public during Haihatus’ summer exhibition hours, with admission included in the exhibition entry fee.
In addition to the summer exhibition, Haihatus’s versatile spaces host smaller exhibitions, featuring works by resident artists, for example.
Haihatatus’ second venue, KITA Gallery, specializing in kinetic art, offers an independent exhibition in a cozy lakeside setting along the E4 highway during the summer.
In addition to the summer exhibition, the spacious yard of KITA Gallery also hosts other events, such as the community snow art event LUMIKITA in winter.

Year-round
Haihatus organizes and coordinates various events and cultural projects year-round.
The traditional Finnish “iltamat” (evening gathering/soiree) have been revamped through the Fantastiset Iltamat event, held during the winter season at Taidelaitos Haihatus.
As in traditional iltamat, the audience can expect an entertaining and impactful lineup of performances and program segments, complete with intermissions. However, since this is Haihatus, the offerings will naturally be presented in a multi-artistic manner.
We announce upcoming Fantastiset iltamat on Haihatus’ Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/taidelaitoshaihatus.

The Kulttuurikonkeli cycling route was designed during the ideation workshop of the Haiku cultural project, supported by Taike (Arts Promotion Center Finland). Its purpose is to inspire and encourage both locals and visitors to embark on a small exploration of the surrounding area.

Collaboration with the local reception center (VOK) and residents of the Haihatus artist residency has led to new, free events open to all, such as the Joutsa-Slavic Maslenitsa Spring Festival and artist-led art workshops during the residency season from September to April.
You can find more information about upcoming workshops and festivals in the News section of this page and on Haihatus’ Facebook page.
The laid-back MusaSunnuntai concerts invite people to enjoy summer evenings with some of the most interesting names in indie music.
NOTE: There will be no MusaSunnuntai concerts in Summer 2025, as we are focusing on the service design for the summer exhibition and reorganizing our activities.
Runs annually from September to April
We welcome new artists and arts students from all art disciplines to join our residence programme!

GOOD Based on 200 reviews Piergiorgio Colone2025-04-30Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Anne Rantanen2024-08-31Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hauskoja taideteoksia, aika meni rattoisasti. Paula Autio2024-08-10Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mahdottoman jännittävä iso alue töynnä mitä mielikuvituksellisempia taideteoksia, joka saa kävijän huumorimielelle. Pihoissa, taloissa, metsiköissä ja pellolla on tilataidetta, fantasiaa, kierrätyskamasta tehtyä taidetta, elävää musiikkia, hetekoita ja sohvia lepäämistä varten, syömistä ja juomista, omenoita tarjolla ja mukava johtaja Risto . Harri Laisi2024-07-20Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Olipa kiva ja monipuolinen näyttely hauskassa miljöössä. Lippukassalla oli ystävällinen palvelu ja museokortilla pääsi sisään. Oheistapahtumana KITA-taidetalo Huttulan nurkilla. Nämä kannattaa ehdottomasti tsekata!

Pekka LehikoinenVahvistettu Haihatus is a wonderland Amazing exhibition, and beautiful area with so much to see <3 Also KITA gallery which is near Haihatus had interesting moving art. Best experience of summer! Miku WVahvistettu Interesting exhibitions A lot of outdoor exhibitions in addition to the houses and it wasn't crowded so it was easy to keep our distance or wait for our turn in some places. TeWeVahvistettu Quite nice Surprisingly interesting actually. We didn’t have very high expectations but were positively surprised. Some very interesting pieces and we especially liked the mirror house standing in the middle of a field. juan kasariVahvistettu Uudistunut Uudistunut Haihatus jatkaa raikkaammalla otteella.
The activity of Haihatus also includes the Kinetic Art House KITA, established in 2022, which is located right next to main road “Nelostie” (E75). The gallery, specializing in moving art, presents a summer exhibition this year with the theme of Invisibility. The artworks extend from the gallery’s roof all the way to the shoreline. The two-story house continuously adapts to the needs of kinetic contemporary art and artists.
