Haihatus 2026 – an experiential art destination

 Rhizome

The 27th summer exhibition at the Haihatus Art Center will open in summer 2026 as a whole built around the theme of rhizome. The exhibition will be spread across the buildings of the old Joutsa care facility in the middle of the Finnish countryside.

This year, 15 artists or artist groups will be participating – as well as one dog. The selections were made by Haihatus’s artistic working group through invitations and an open call.

Like art, a network does not ask for permission to grow. It does not progress linearly, but connects, breaks, and continues elsewhere. The exhibition examines otherness, interdependence, and circulation: what happens when humans are not at the center?

How does art breathe together with animals, plants, materials, and buildings?

What happens when networks replace hierarchies?

The works spread through the spaces like underground roots: installations, sculptures, participatory environments, spatial experiments. Some invite you to play, some to be quiet, some to get lost.

Last summer’s crowd favorites—Andy Best & Merja Puustinen’s bouncy castle sculpture Last Forest and Risto Puurunen’s DIY shadow theater—remain in the area like memories, part of a new whole.

The revamped exhibition area pays special attention to families with children, animals, and groups. In addition to art, there are activities, games, rest areas, and side programs, such as spray painting and collage workshops.

During the exhibition tour, visitors can enjoy a treat at Haihatus’ vegan summer café. The art shop sells unique accessories, jewelry, and art objects. The overall experience is crowned by a stay at Haihatus Art Camping, which offers night tours and music evenings by the campfire, among other things.

The Rihmasto exhibition is open from June 20 to August 30, 2026.

The artists featured in the exhibition will be announced in March 2026.
